Abstract

Cassava peel and banana peel wastes have potential as bioethanol feedstocks. This study compared the flame characteristics of bioethanol from these wastes through hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation. The experiment used Farmipan yeast containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae at 4 g and 8 g, with fuel volumes of 1 mL, 2 mL, and 3 mL. The observed parameters were soluble sugar, flame height, flame area, and flame duration. Cassava peel produced 66°Brix soluble sugar, whereas banana peel produced 16°Brix. Banana peel bioethanol with 8 g yeast produced the highest flame height at all volumes. The highest flame area was obtained from banana peel 8 g at 1 mL and cassava peel 8 g at 2–3 mL. The longest duration was obtained from banana peel 4 g at 1–2 mL and cassava peel 4 g at 3 mL. These findings are preliminary because ethanol content, calorific value, yield, and emissions were not measured.
